A good (design) quote...

I love a good quote. Specifically, I love a good quote relating to design.

In my last article, we focused on the 10 Principals for Good Design by Dieter Rams. In this article, I have collated some quotes (related to design) that I love to go back to and remind myself from time to time.

“Even if it is true that the average man seems most comfortable with the commonplace and familiar, it is equally true that catering to bad taste, which we so readily attribute to the average reader, merely perpetuates that mediocrity and denies the reader one of the most easily accessible means for aesthetic development and eventual enjoyment.”

— Paul Rand

I love this quote. As designers, we should always be striving for that next step, for that next level of thinking.

As designers, we should never stick to what is commonplace or “safe” — it is our role to be always thinking ahead, and to always challenge our clients on what they perceive as good design.

Another quote from Paul Rand is:

“Design is the silent ambassador of your brand.”

Design is more than a means to end. And far more important than just a way to convey information. Design is how people *actually* see, feel, and interact with your brand.

When considering design costs, don’t think of it as an expense that yields no return. Instead, think of it as an investment that directly relates to how people will perceive your brand.

Also ask yourself this: by using a cheap design service, am I making my brand look cheap?

“The real questions are: Does it solve a problem? Is it serviceable? How is it going to look in ten years?”

— Charles Eames

Are you thinking long term when it comes to design? As designers, we should always be thinking ten years ahead — how will this look down the track?

As a client, you should be trusting your designer that what they are creating will stand the test of time. Remember, if it looks similar to what everyone else is producing in your industry / service, it’s already out of date.

“If you do it right, it will last forever.”

— Massimo Vignelli

The end result should be something that stands the test of time.

Trust your designer(s) with what they have created.

What are your thoughts? Do you have a quote you re-read regularly?
